Eating keto at a restaurant comes down to one move: order a protein plus a non-starchy vegetable, and cut the carb-heavy sides. Skip the bread basket, rice, pasta, tortillas, breading, and any sweet or sugary sauce, then ask for simple swaps, a side salad or extra vegetables instead of fries, oil and vinegar instead of a sweet dressing, grilled instead of breaded. Almost every cuisine has a keto-friendly plate hiding in it once you know what to look for.

Net carbs, total carbohydrates minus fiber, are what matter here. The problem is rarely the protein itself; it is the hidden sugar in sauces and the starchy sides that arrive by default. When you are unsure, look a dish up in the keto food database or run the whole plate through the Is My Meal Keto? checker before you commit. The sections below cover the eight cuisines you will run into most.

Italian

  • Order: grilled or roasted meats and fish, antipasto plates of cured meat, cheese, and olives, and big salads. If the place makes one, a fathead pizza at 4g net carbs or a cauliflower pizza crust at 6g is a legitimate low-carb slice. Creamy sauces work over vegetables: Alfredo sauce at 3g and pesto sauce at 1g are fine, plus Caesar dressing at 1g on a salad and a dusting of parmesan at 4g.
  • Skip: bread, pasta, risotto, breaded cutlets, and a regular pizza at 33g net carbs.
  • Swap tip: ask for Alfredo, pesto, or a bolognese over grilled chicken or a side of vegetables instead of noodles.

Mexican

Indian

  • Order: tandoori chicken at 2g, grilled kebabs, and paneer cheese dishes at 3.4g like saag paneer. Creamy curries such as butter chicken at 11g and chicken tikka masala at 12g fit in a controlled portion, since most of the carbs sit in the sauce, not the meat.
  • Skip: naan, rice, samosas, potato dishes, chutneys, and sweet mango lassi.
  • Swap tip: eat the curry without rice or naan, and ask whether the sauce was thickened or sweetened with sugar.

Chinese and Thai

Mediterranean and Greek

  • Order: shawarma chicken at 2g, gyro meat at 2g, and grilled kebabs, plus a Greek salad with feta cheese at 4g and olives at 3g.
  • Skip: pita, rice pilaf, tabbouleh, large scoops of hummus, and falafel at 25g.
  • Swap tip: order the gyro or shawarma as a platter or over salad instead of stuffed into a pita.

Japanese and Sushi

  • Order: sashimi, which is essentially just fish and near zero carbs, along with miso soup, seaweed salad, grilled skewers, and a small serving of edamame. A cucumber-wrapped roll at 4g swaps rice for cucumber.
  • Skip: the rice under nigiri and rolls, tempura, and sweet eel or spicy-mayo sauces. A California roll at 28g shows how fast sushi rice adds up.
  • Swap tip: choose sashimi over rolls, or ask for rolls wrapped in cucumber or soy paper instead of rice.

American Steakhouse

  • Order: a beef steak at 0g or salmon at 0g with a non-starchy vegetable side such as asparagus at 2g or broccoli at 4g, finished with butter at 0.1g.
  • Skip: the bread basket, baked potato, fries, onion rings, and sweet steak glazes.
  • Swap tip: trade the potato or fries for a double vegetable or a simple side salad, most kitchens do this without blinking.

Breakfast and Diner

  • Order: eggs any style, bacon, sausage, and omelets loaded with cheese and vegetables, plus avocado if it is on the menu.
  • Skip: toast, pancakes, hash browns, home fries, pastries, and orange juice.
  • Swap tip: ask the kitchen to replace toast and potatoes with extra eggs, sliced tomato, or avocado.

Keeping any meal keto

The pattern repeats across every cuisine: anchor the plate on protein and fat, choose vegetables that grow above ground, and treat sauces as the main risk. Sweet, sticky, and thickened sauces are where the sugar hides, so lean on the fat-based options in our keto condiments and sauces guide and load up from the low-carb vegetables list. Cheese is almost always a safe add, see the best keto cheeses, and when you are grabbing something quick, our keto fast food guide covers the drive-thru. Frequently asked questions

How do you stay keto at a restaurant?

Order a protein and a non-starchy vegetable, and cut the starchy sides. Skip bread, rice, pasta, tortillas, breading, and sweet sauces, then ask for swaps like a side salad or extra vegetables instead of fries. Sugary and thickened sauces are the most common hidden carb source, so ask how they are made when you are not sure.

What Chinese food is keto?

Steamed or stir-fried meat and vegetables, egg drop soup, and Asian lettuce wraps are your best bets, along with coconut-milk Thai curries served without rice. Avoid rice, noodles, dumplings, and sweet-and-sour, teriyaki, or other sugary sauces. Ask for stir-fries without cornstarch-thickened sauce, since that is where a lot of the carbs come from.

Is sushi keto?

Traditional sushi is not, because the rice adds a lot of carbs, a single California roll runs about 28g net carbs. You can still eat keto at a sushi restaurant by ordering sashimi, miso soup, seaweed salad, or rolls wrapped in cucumber instead of rice. Also watch for sweet sauces like eel sauce, which add sugar.
