Fruit has a reputation as "nature's candy," and on keto that is exactly the problem: most fruit is loaded with natural sugar that eats up your entire daily carb budget in one serving. But a handful of fruits are genuinely low in net carbs, and several more are fine in small portions. This guide ranks the most common fruits from lowest to highest net carbs so you know what to reach for and what to leave on the shelf.

Net carbs are total carbohydrates minus fiber, the number that actually affects ketosis. Want to check a specific fruit fast? Look it up in our keto food database, or drop a whole snack into the Is My Meal Keto? checker.

The best keto fruits (eat freely)

These are low enough in net carbs that a normal serving fits an everyday keto plan:

  • Avocado, 1.8g net carbs. Botanically a fruit, nutritionally the keto MVP: mostly fat and fiber.
  • Olives, 3g net carbs. Salty, high-fat, endlessly snackable.
  • Lemon, 3.8g net carbs. A squeeze adds brightness for almost no carbs.
  • Lime, 5g net carbs. Same story as lemon; great in drinks and dressings.
  • Starfruit, 4g net carbs. An underrated low-sugar tropical option.
  • Fresh strawberries, 4g net carbs per small serving. The most keto-friendly berry by volume.
  • Fresh raspberries, 3.3g net carbs. High fiber, low sugar.
  • Fresh blackberries, 3.1g net carbs. Another berry that earns its place.
  • Fresh coconut, 6.2g net carbs, with a lot of fat and fiber.

Keto fruits in moderation

Fruits to skip on keto

These are high enough in sugar that a normal serving blows a keto day on its own:

How to keep fruit keto

Three rules keep fruit from wrecking your day. First, default to berries and avocado, they give you the fruit experience at a fraction of the sugar. Second, treat everything else as a garnish, not a serving: a few slices of a "skip" fruit inside a bigger low-carb meal is very different from eating a whole one. Third, weigh or measure until you have a feel for portions, because fruit sugar is deceptively concentrated.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most keto-friendly fruit?

Avocado is the single most keto-friendly fruit at about 1.8g net carbs, since it is mostly fat and fiber. Among sweet fruits, fresh raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries are the lowest in net carbs.

Can you eat fruit on keto at all?

Yes, in the right amounts. Berries, avocado, olives, lemon, and lime fit an everyday keto plan. Higher-sugar fruits like banana, grapes, mango, and apple are best avoided because one serving can use up your entire daily carb budget.

Are bananas keto?

No. A medium banana has around 24g net carbs, which is close to or above a full day's carb limit on keto. It is one of the least keto-friendly common fruits.
